Levels of Excitement: World Championships or World Cup?
For fans of winter sports athleticism, there are two events that bring thrills to the cross country ski community: the FIS World Cup and FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. Each is exciting in its own right, but what’s the difference between these two premier competitions? While both feature the world’s top talent, they differ primarily in their frequency and duration. One is an annual, months-long test of endurance and logistical survival; the other is a high-stakes, two-week athletic pressure cooker that only happens once every two years, and some in Scandinavia would argue that it rivals the Olympics in prestige.
World Cup: The Winter-Long Marathon
The FIS World Cup is not a singular event, but a relentless winter-long circuit. Running annually from late November through March, athletes in several disciplines travel to iconic venues like Val di Fiemme, Lahti, Les Rousses and Engadin – all places where Lumi offers trips. Skiers compete in dozens of individual and team races across the season, accumulating points based on their placement in each event. The athlete with the most points at the end of the season is crowned the winner, even if throughout the season they may have had their ups and downs, or even skip a race or two. The World Cup is the ultimate test of an athlete’s resilience and adaptability. Winning requires more than just raw talent: skiers must perform in sprint and distance events, at high altitudes and at sea-level, adapt to unpredictable weather, mid-season illnesses and the exhaustion of continuous travel and racing. In short: perseverance pays off to win at the World Cup.

Overlapping the excitement of the World Cup each winter is the Tour de Ski, a stage event that consists of several races in close succession at a number of venues on the World Cup circuit. These races feature both heart-racing sprints and grueling climbs. The hardest climb of them all? The infamous Alpe Cermis climb in Cavalese, where the week of racing ends on a climb up an alpine skiing hill. Lumi’s Tour de Ski trip offers guests the chance to watch this epic effort trailside just feet away from the world’s top racers. Last year, Lumi guests cheered on Jessie Diggins from just feet away en route to winning the Tour de Ski. Although Diggins won’t be competing in 2027 to defend her title, Julia Kern, Ben Ogden and Gus Schumacher, all athletes with World Cup podium finishes, are sure to give the USA a reason to cheer next season. We’re excited to see how they do, and what new athletes might be on their way up too!

Looking for some of the most die-hard fans on the World Cup circuit? You’ll likely find them at the Holmenkollen World Cup in Norway, where women and men put on a 50 km show for tens of thousands of passionate spectators. Join Lumi in 2027 for a rousing weekend of cheering at the Holmenkollen, before skiing Norway’s most iconic trails above Oslo and continuing on to Lillehammer for the legendary Birken Worldloppet event.

World Championships: High-Stakes Theater
If the World Cup is a strategic game of chess, the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships is an in-it-to-win-it showdown. Held every two years (during odd-numbered years), the World Championships condense all the glory and heartbreak of Nordic sports into a two-week festival of skiing. Rather than a global tour, the World Championships take place at a single host city. In 2027 athletes will convene in Sweden for the 2027 Falun Nordic World Championships in late-February and early-March for two weeks of racing. Unlike the World Cup, racers aren’t vying for points over a months-long season. Each competition is decided on one day with the top athletes awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, along with the prestigious title of "World Champion," which carries bragging rights until the next World Championships event in two years time – as well as an extra starting spot in that race for the nation with the winning athlete.

Because it happens biennially, the pressure is immense. Athletes spend months tailoring their training to peak during the two-week race window. There are no do-overs or opportunities to make up for a single poor performance or wax tech miscue. The Nordic World Championships bring the distinct worlds of cross-country, ski jumping and Nordic combined under a single, festive umbrella, creating an electric atmosphere akin to the Winter Olympics. Predictably, fans go all out for the occasion and are almost as entertaining as the races themselves.
