Still Skiing in Seiser Alm: Chasing Winter in the Dolomites
Just when you think the ski season might be over, the Dolomites catch you by surprise — in the best possible way. While much of Europe is trading ski boots for hiking shoes, or skis for bikes, there’s still excellent skiing in Italy’s South Tyrol region, where Seiser Alm, Europe’s highest plateau, regularly holds on to snow well into April, or even May. So many people have forgotten about skiing that the chairlifts and gondolas close for the season, despite 80+ km of groomed cross country skiing still available, not to mention endless early morning crust cruising.
Not ready for spring, I traveled to Seiser Alm last weekend to extend my ski season With sunny skies, mild temperatures, and full snow coverage, Seiser Alm offered ideal spring skiing.
To give you a sense for the experience, check out this video I captured of the vintage alpine ski race in Seiser Alm last weekend. And this video of sunrise skiing and crust cruising, also in Seiser Alm last weekend.
What makes skiing in spring so special? It’s that sweet blend of seasons: the thrill of gliding through quiet, well-groomed tracks and the warmth of the sun on your face as you enjoy a little break. The days are longer, the light softer, and everything feels just a little more relaxed. Gone is the mid-winter rush. For skiers who participate in races, the race season and any pre-race training, is in the rearview mirror. What’s left is space to breathe, ski, and soak in the scenery and perhaps even a little sun tan. And did I mention the scenery?. Seiser Alm is nestled among some of the most iconic peaks in the Dolomites, including the rugged Langkofel / Sasso Luongo – the “long rock” and Plattkofel / Sasso Piato, the “flat rock.” With the snow still blanketing the meadows and the jagged mountains glowing in the afternoon light, it’s a blend that’s hard to beat. Seiser Alm is also one of our trip leader favorites.
After a morning on the trails — cross-country skiing in Seiser Alm or perhaps alpine skiing the famous Sella Ronda, — it’s a tradition to settle into a sunny terrace for lunch: skis off, sunglasses on, with a steaming bowl of bolognese and cold drink in hand. I’m left to wonder what everyone else is doing in the valley below, and how I can have this whole ski paradise to myself.
Thanks to a strong snowpack and well-maintained trails, Seiser Alm is still offering great conditions. Every weekend, I think it’s going to be my last ski of the season, and yet inevitably, the season continues.
