Gus Schumacher
Age: 20
How long you've been skiing: About 15 years, 10 competitively
Your favorite workout: My favorite workout is 6x4' L4, either on rollerskis or bounding, because it feels like it's the workout that gives me the biggest gains. It's never easy, but that's what makes it feel good afterwards.
#1 reason you ski race: The biggest reason that I race is that it gives me a strong purpose, with concrete goals that I have in mind every morning I wake up. I love the structure and meaning of having athletic ability be my objective.
Your athlete philosophy: My athlete philosophy is to work smarter than other people, and just hard enough that my body can keep up
Biography: Gus Schumacher is a first-year member of the U.S. Cross Country A-Team, as well as the first ever American to win a Junior World Ski Championship. Born in Madison, WI, and raised in Anchorage, AK, he was exposed to ski culture by his (recreational) skier parents. As a junior with Alaska Winter Stars, his coach Jan Buron taught him to work hard and be smart about training. Still coached by Jan in Anchorage, Gus stays involved with AWS by going to mixed practices and talking occasionally with the younger groups. Using his World Cup, World Championship, and National-level success and expertise, he shares knowledge and ideas with his teammates at home and on his U.S. Ski Team. One of the biggest things he's looking forward to over his career is to build the American men's level of skiing to a place where high-level medals are anticipated. His success at relays in the Junior World Championships on teams of his peers are an influential factor in that. Aside from skiing, Gus is in his junior year studying Civil Engineering at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
